The architectural design of the project comes from Hopkins Architecture and Sasaki, and the lighting design comes from HLB. The introduction of natural light and the openness of the space have become the biggest features of the project. In the central hall of the core space, natural light penetrates from the open space on all sides, forming an open feeling.
The whole building presents a high degree of transparency, bringing the line of sight to the various functional activity spaces to the greatest extent, and the overall spatial organization structure is clearly presented, which still creates a friendly and pleasant spatial relationship in the larger building.
The design team ensured that the project received adequate daylight penetration and glare control through early studies of daylight.
At night, softly filtered interior lighting reveals the building’s inner structure and translucent shell, emitting an elegant glow. The design method of internal light transmission softens the entire building line, ensures the nighttime effect of the building, and also improves the comfort of the space.
The volume of the space is expressed through the upward lighting technique, creating a comfortable visual effect by reducing the contrast with the sports lighting. The luminaire needs to be installed every 3 meters for a balanced visual effect; and this arrangement greatly simplifies subsequent luminaire maintenance. At the same time, plaster with appropriate elasticity and density was selected to strengthen and reflect light, achieving excellent results.
Inside the arena, 316 ArenaVision luminaires were installed to create a crystal clear view for fans and athletes. These floodlights light up the entire stadium with extremely low energy consumption. In addition, the fixtures can be individually controlled to keep light levels below 3500 lux during TV broadcasts, meeting FIFA requirements. After all the goals were achieved, the project was a huge success for Friendship Arena.
